Social is unmistakable too big a thing to miss. As is, it has the potential to turn your business around, enhance your brand image or ruin it completely, and get you high-converting, high-quality leads. Getting social media right is one of the most important things you could do for your online business today. Here are a few blunders you should never do on social media:
Not having conversations
No one is too big for social media. Some people just don’t bother to maintain small talk. In real life, small talk doesn’t mean much to us. It’s just a way of breaking ice. Surprisingly, on Social Media, small talk is everything. In fact, it’s this small talk that leads to wonderful opportunities and forms the basis of a great community. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that it’s alright not to bother talking to someone, answering a question, or even being polite and saying “thank you” and “welcome”.
Self-promotions
Social media is not for promoting your products and service. You may do I indirectly, once in a while, but this too with discretion. Anything you do on social that comes across as a direct pitch is calling for trouble. When you are interesting enough and work hard to gain others’ trust, people will eventually look to see what you do, what you provide, etc. There’s no need to shoot yourself in the head by pitching directly.
Tweeting too much
It’s clichéd, but I can’t help it. Too much of anything is bad and tweets are no different. You don’t need to tweet more than 100 or 200 tweets in a day. You don’t even have to touch half of those tweets. As long as you share valuable information, interesting bits and pieces of news, contribute tips, and answer questions, and maintain small, encouraging conversations, you are doing a great job already. Do as many Retweets as you want to (nothing wrong with being generous), but don’t tweet just as much.
Tweeting it all together
Another variant of the point made above is to tweet all that you have to – say 10- 20 tweets and 30-40 retweets – all within your time frame of 1-2 hours. I understand that can’t possibly login and stay active on Twitter all day but doing it all together is a disaster. Plenty of tools such as Buffer App, Social Oomph, and others are available for you to schedule your tweets such that the tweets are spread-out and delivered throughout the day.
